The stoning of the devil during the Hajj Pilgrimage reminds the people how Ibrahim (AS) brought his only son, 8 year old Ismail (AS) for sacrificing on the commands of Allah (SWT). He had earlier left his wife Hajira and new born son Ismail (AS) in the desert upon Allah’s command. While returning after eight years to his family, Prophet Ibrahim (AS) dreamed about a man telling him to sacrifice his son according to Allah’s will. He saw the same dream for three nights and since he was a Prophet, this was a form of ‘Wahi’, the divine instruction. Ibrahim (AS) went to his wife and asked her to dress up Ismail (AS) as he wants to take him out for a walk.
After reaching Mina, Ibrahim (AS) told his son Ismail (AS) about his dream and will of Allah (SWT). Ismail (AS) asked his father not to hesitate in following the command of Allah (SWT). He asked his father to slaughter him by putting his face down so that he does not have to see his face. It was unacceptable to shaitan who tried to dissuade Ibrahim (AS) from following the commands of Allah (SWT). Shaitan appeared three times before Ibrahim (AS) at the points where Jamarat stands today and Ibrahim (AS) ward him off every time by pelting seven stones. He remained steadfast on his decision to sacrifice his son. Allah was pleased with him and a Ram was sent from heaven to sacrifice in place of Ismail (AS). [May Allah be pleased with Prophet Ibrahim (A.S) and His son Ismail (A.S)]
