Situated in a desert, this enormous crater is located northeast of the city of Mecca. The crater bottom fills with water in the rainy season and turns into a pan of salt when the water evaporates in the summer. The surrounding area had witnessed a large amount of volcanic activity and hence the sandy plains surrounding the crater consist mostly of volcanic ash. Camping is allowed around the crater but if you are planning for an overnight stay then you must hire a guide.
